Killing Joke - Seeing Red

this song is so nice i had to listen to it twice.  from the 2003 s/t killing joke record, an album you either love or hate or just think is ok.  anyway great song, good lyrics, etc.  definitely my favorite from that record.

where are these samples from?

this has been puzzling me for years.  where is this alcohol speech from?  is it from a movie?  it sounds to me like in these two songs it is the same guy talking but i'm not 100% sure.

Hard-Ons with Neil Hamburger - Six Pack

definitely the best cover of Six Pack i've ever heard

music links: another nirvana link

i'm just going to chalk this up to an eerie coincidence, but it would also have made a pretty excellent reference if it was deliberate.  we'll probably never know for sure, though.

listen to the melody in Hollow Hills as he sings, "suicide" at about 2:44  then listen to the melody in Old Age.
very similar melodies.  the intervals are basically the same but the phrasing is a little different.

Trist - Květy snových dálek

three long songs in a row!

this is a new "depressive" black metal song that to me sounds as much like 90's shoegaze as a kvlt basement tape.  by the end you'll have "wicked game" stuck in your head and you'll wonder why.  great stuff from this czech band.

Krallice - Monolith Of Possession

new album is fantastic

music links: this riff

an oft-overlooked but classic music link is the Nirvana / Killing Joke scandal.  but basically, the riff from hit 90's song Come As You Are is almost straight-lifted from the song Eighties by the Killing joke.
Geordie Walker, Killing Joke's guitar player, said that the band was "very pissed off about that, but it's obvious to everyone. We had two separate musicologists' reports saying it was. Our publisher sent their publisher a letter saying it was and they went 'Boo, never heard of ya!', but the hysterical thing about Nirvana saying they'd never heard of us was that they'd already sent us a Christmas card!"
there is a slight difference in the rhythm but the similarity is undeniable.  also notice the arrangement: the guitar riff is played unaccompanied at specific points in the original song.

another band that completely ripped off Killing Joke: Ministry.  listen to any of the classic Ministry albums - Land Of Rape And Honey, The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste, etc and then compare them to the 1980 self-titled Killing Joke album and What's This For...!  or how about the Killing Joke song, Land Of Milk And Honey?  it's like hearing Al Jourgensen say to himself, "Oh, I guess we're not going to be a successful synth-pop band, let's steal this sound instead!"

The Germs - GI

The Germs' only album is one of the best albums ever made.  and i do mean literally, since the invention of the vinyl record, of all the records that have ever been made, this is one of the best.  The Germs were one of the best rock bands in history.  literally, put them up against any rock band from the beginning until today and they hold their own.  The Germs were as good as Led Zeppelin if not better.  every song on this album is like a revelation and it never gets old no matter how many times you hear it.  these are not my opinions, these are FACTS.
