2010 was a fairly mediocre year in terms of new music that i personally would enjoy. this year was all about old music: re-issues, compilations, previously unreleased material. it was a great year for Jimi Hendrix fans - some excellent compilations, a killer boxed set and even a posthumous album. i was especially disappointed by most of the rap albums i had been looking forward to. most of them fell quite short of my expectations and were usually surpassed by unofficial mixtapes/bootlegs. also this was definitely the year black metal jumped the shark. enough with that stuff - you know who you are. cut it out.
my choice for album of the year is The Vaselines' "Sex With An X". it's amazing that a band can disappear for twenty-one years and come back with new songs every bit as brilliant and memorable as before. it's like they never left. this album is easily better than anything influenced by the legacy of the Vaselines (quite a lot in my estimation) to come out in the past ten years or so. very solid album, great songs the whole way through.
a similar trick was performed by Burzum, who has been in the hut since the 90's. he got out of jail last year and came out with one of the best, weirdest and most authentic black metal albums of 2010. speaking of prison, Gucci Mane released about ten million mixtapes this year plus an album. good on ya mate. the final Afrirampo album is probably their best, a grand finale in every sense. much less experimental than their previous work and much more rock-oriented. they're going out on the top of their game.
i'll be posting a mixtape or two highlighting some of this music soon.

i just really enjoy this re-purposing of lyrics. going to go out on a limb and assume that "Blue Velvet" had something to do with it, but that is purely my speculation.

The Little Black Egg
a garage rock staple and one of my favorites. it was originally recorded by The Nightcrawlers in 1965. but my favorite version is probably the one by The Music Explosion. they got all the little subtleties just right and brought them out.

The Kommotions - Little Black Egg (1965)
The Music Explosion - Little Black Egg (1966)

Gloomy Sunday
this song has been done countless times by many different artists over the years. here are a few renditions, including the original. with help from this last.fm group: http://www.last.fm/group/Gloomy+Sunday/forum/107619/_/467213
i don't include the Billie Holiday version because everyone has heard it already. also, adding the apologetic "it was only a dream" verse is a disgrace and makes my skin crawl. whoever's idea that was, that was awful.
Rezső Seress - Szomorú Vasárnap (1933)
Paul Whiteman with Johnny Hauser - Gloomy Sunday (1936)
Zvonko Bogdan - Tuzna je nedelja (unknown year)
Genesis - Gloomy Sunday (1968)
Lydia Lunch - Gloomy Sunday (1979)
Stonehenge - Gloomy Sunday (unknown year, from WFMU Incorrect Music comp)
Diamanda Galás - Gloomy Sunday (1992)
Venetian Snares - Öngyilkos Vasárnap (2005)

Big Business - Focus Pocus
oh, how i miss 2004. the Melvins released Pigs of the Roman Empire and Big Business put out their opus album Head For The Shallow. i know how great the idea of the two bands joining together looked on paper but ultimately, the two bands were better apart.
don't you remember? you used to do stuff like this:

Leigh Stephens - I Grow Higher
this is pretty mind-boggling because of when this is recorded. this song is from 1969
just imagine guided by voices, sebadoh, really any indie rock band from 1980's - 1990's... i guess this guy was a visionary.
